CHAPTER 10

Mary Elle, and Rita sat on a park bench on the town square, watching Ryder and Liam playing nearby in the playground. They chatted and caught up on each other's lives.

“How’s everything going with Emma?” Mary Elle asked, concerned.

Rita sighed. “It’s been tough. Bob was upset when he learned about that guy sneaking into our house. But he understands Emma wasn’t in an easy situation. She’s been struggling more than we knew, adjusting to being back, and we’re doing our best to support her.”

Mary Elle nodded. “I’m glad to hear that you’re there for her. She’s lucky to have a family like you.”

“We’ll do whatever it takes to help her get through this.”

“Speaking of family, how are Emma’s kids doing?”

“They are doing so well. Alexander is thriving in his career and being a father. Mandy is doing very well in school. Andrew is a workaholic, but he’s doing well. Having Emma back has made a tremendous impact on their life. They needed her.”

Mary Elle smiled. “That’s so good to hear. You have a lot to be grateful for.”

They watched as Ryder and Liam ran around the playground playing tag.

Mary Elle laughed. “Can you believe it? We’re grandmothers now!”

Rita chuckled. “I know. I never thought I'd see the day. Yet, here we are, sitting on a park bench, watching our grandkids run around.”

Mary Elle shook her head in disbelief. “It’s crazy how time flies. It feels like just yesterday we were running around on the playground.”

They watched Ryder and Liam run over to them, out of breath and grinning from ear to ear. “Grandma, grandma! Did you see me? I climbed the monkey bars!” Ryder exclaimed.

Mary Elle clapped and cheered for him. “You were amazing! We’re so proud of you!” Mary Elle said, giving Ryder a high five.

Rita turned to Mary Elle. “You know, being a grandmother isn’t so bad. We get to spoil them, do all the fun stuff, and then send them home to their parents.”

Mary Elle laughed. “That’s true. No dealing with sleepless nights or dirty diapers.”

As Mary Elle and Rita continued to talk and watch the boys, Mrs. Adelman joined them.

“What brings you here today, Mrs. Adelman?” Mary Elle asked.

“Oh, you know, just getting my steps in,” she responded.

“It’s a lovely day to be outside,” Rita said.

“Have you heard the hot gossip going around?” Mrs. Adelman asked with a sly smile.

Mary Elle and Rita leaned in, intrigued. “No, what is it?” Mary Elle asked.

Mrs. Adelman lowered her voice. “Well, rumor has it that our lovely town veterinarian has a new love interest.”

Mary Elle smiled. “That’s great! She is such a lovely girl.”

Rita nodded in agreement. “She’s a sweetheart. Penny loves her.”

They continued to chat and catch up on the latest news and gossip in town. Even though Mrs. Adelman was known for being nosy, Mary Elle and Rita knew she had a good heart and cared for their community.
